Relief Eating is driven by overload, not hunger.  It often feels urgent or trance-like because the goal isn't comfort; it's relief.  When pressure builds beyond capacity, the body uses eating to restore internal balance.   

Why its misunderstood

Relief Eating is usually mislabeled as:

But relief Eating isn't a character flaw.

Highly processed foods like ice cream, chocolate, or chips work quickly on the brain’s reward system, making them the go-to choices. Instead of focusing on ‘bingeing’ which only describes the act of overeating, relief eating explains the full cycle, the buildup, the eating, and the resolution afterward​

Why do I sometimes eat like I’m on autopilot?

This type of eating isn’t a conscious choice, it’s eating for relief and it runs on autopilot. Driven by peak stress or depletion. You only fully realise what’s happening when the eating has finished.

This isn’t hunger or habit, it’s your system responding as it has been designed.

 

Whether is a peak stress episode or restriction of food, your body overrides conscious decision-making and pushes you toward food. You don’t choose to eat, it happens.

By the time you notice, it’s already done.
